Australian import Iggy Azalea is scheduled to release her second album titled ‘Digital Distortion’. The 25 year old rapper has made ripples in the hip hop world, despite coming from a background not associated with the music genre much. She has broken cultural and perceptive barriers to make it in the game. Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly, Iggy transitioned from the modelling world to become one of the most recognisable female rappers in the world. She wanted to follow in the footsteps of her idols, Missy Elliot and Tupac Shakur.
She moved to America in 2006 where she was based in the south moving from Miami, Houston and Atlanta where she stated rapping influenced by the Southern drawl style. She released a mixtape in 2011 called ‘Ignorant Art’, which brought her to America’s consciousness.
During that time she was developing a dalliance with rapper ASAP rocky which gained her some traction but it was not till 2012 when she was featured on the top cover of renowned XXL magazine with the likes of French Montana and Roscoe Dash. It was at this point that Iggy really burst onto the scene and people sat up to take notice.
‘TrapGold’ was her second mixtape before she was signed up to Mercury records for her first album, ‘The New Classic’.
‘The New Classic’ had quite some hit songs such as ‘Mediocre’ featuring .T.I, her monster hit, ‘Fancy’ with Charli XCX and ‘Black Widow’ featuring Rita Ora. ‘Fancy’ and ‘Black Widow’ did well on the charts becoming number 1 and 3 respectively on the Billboard charts. She has enjoyed success with her debut album, it was Grammy nominated, it was the second-most streamed album in 2014 and her song ‘Fancy’ was dubbed the song of the summer last year. As a white female rapper from a unique background, she had broken the glass ceiling for her success.
Her second album ‘Digital Distortion’ is set to come out next year. She revealed the name of the album on Twitter a few days ago. A new track called ‘Zillion’ is in the works as Iggy wants to show her fans a taste of her new album. The polarising rapper has finished the photo shoot for the upcoming album though it has not been released yet. The album is produced by Def Jam records. She has often featured amazing acts such as T.I, Rita Ora, Jennifer Hudson, Nicki Minaj and Britney Spears in her collabos but she was cagey when she was asked on Twitter which artists she would feature in her new album. When asked by a fan on the micro blogging site, she kept a tight lid on it saying that she will ‘ask people soon.’
‘Digital Distortion’ will no doubt continue the unique style which Iggy has accustomed her fans to, she has risen to become one of the most popular amazing acts in the hip hop business even ruffling feathers in the process having rumoured to have had beef with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj who ironically have featured in her songs.
2016 could be the year of Iggy Azalea with ‘Digital Distortion’, having already captured the hearts of hip hop fans.
